P2(a-g) Analysis of a Media Product
Meaning: The media product can be a sales product - for example in a season of a television series - for which the media issues given are the actual material objects for broadcasting.
Purpose: In this section,we are going to analyse media products and audiences. I will choose a media company to analyse their purpose, form, content, meaning, genre and intended audience.

I wanted to do an analysis about a film company- Walt Disney pictures
Walt Disney Pictures is an American film production company and division of Walt Disney Studios, owned by The Walt Disney Company. The division is based at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, and is the main producer of live-action feature films within the Walt Disney Studio.
Walt Disney Pictures has produced a lot of high-grossing films, such as Prates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The lion King and Toy Story 1,2 & 3.
Purpose means the reason for which something is done or created for which something exits.
The company produces animation or fantasy to entertain the children, teenagers or young adults. The story and scenes of this film is interesting, the characters are sometimes humorous and also the effects are attractive, the most important is, every character has their own unique superpower, which is very creative, making this film famous.
It also has a lot of other entertainment as it is a multimedia company, so it does not only do movies, but other kinds of media, such as radio stations, home entertainments, online games and mobile games.
The main purpose of the Disney Pictures is to gain more profit, entertain the audiences through the movies and films they produce and increase the popularity among the others media companies.
(b) Form:
Form means the ways in which the media product is expressed, as well how the meaning is presented. The movie is expressed by the hero image. The posters and characters have special given talents and abilities, which makes it easier for the audience to memorise the characters, also they wear red sharp hero suit, so it is easy to identify,

Walt Disney Pictures not only used the sharp colours to attract audiences, they also use different voice cast to attract them. The form of Disney Pictures are movies and films.
Here is a list of people who voiced the characters in this film. We can see that there are a lot of crews here, Walt Disney Pictures used a range of people to voice the character so the audiences do not feel bored by only listening to a few people's voice, but more range of voices. This makes the film more attractive. Also, every character has different characteristic, making every of them more living and realistic, so people might put their situation in their life, and giving them spaces to imagine and think. This is a very good way to attract audiences because the scenarios that happened in the movie do not usually or never happen in life, but it makes life more interesting.
(c) Content:
The story is set in America. Public opinion turns against humans with superpower- called "Supers", and after the citizens in the city started to stand up for the damage caused by their crime-fighting activities, the government forces them into civilian relocation programs.
However, talents and their born ability could not be changed, Bob, the father of the family, decided to carry on his heroic acts after being dismissed in his previous job.
Helen, the mother of the family then discovered his husband's secret acts behind her back, she then took her children on their way to seek for Bob, after some accident, they all decided to go back to hero life to save the world out of the villains.

(d) Meaning:
Meaning in media means what does the film is trying to bring out or express.
It leads audiences to think and enjoy, some scenes are humorous, some scenes are exciting, and I personally feel it makes the audiences to think at the beginning, because there was a scene that the public was against humans with superpowers, therefore they are forced to relocate into civilian programs, however Bob was forced not to stop a mugging, or he would lose his job. This somehow reflects the society in someway, as sometimes we couldn't follow our heart. I think this is a scene that teaches the audiences a lesson.

(e) Genre:
The genre is a superhero cartoon, because it is presented in animation. The background music is interesting, and it links to each scene. For example, when the characters are fighting with the villains, the music feels nervous, and when the characters are feeling sad, the music is slow. This triggers the audiences's emotion and sensation. The colours of the movie are very bright, and the story is not realistic, emphasising this is a cartoon, because the ability that the hero got is not possible in reality, like controlling ice and to be invisible, and there are no hero and super villains in real world.
(f) Intended audience:
The audiences are mainly children, teenagers or young adults, because the film is creative and exciting, only younger ones would be attracted to watch these type of films. The older adult or elderly might be interested more in films that are realistic.
Taking this movie as an example, The Incredibles is a very humorous and exciting movie, it has a fantastic storyline and all kinds of special effects, music and different actors to play their voice to make the movie more entertaining, therefore it is suitable for either children, teenagers or even young adults, because people in the age range would consider the creativity and the excitement more, the movie does not contain offensive materials, such as hate speeches, bloody and adultery contents, so it is safe for them to watch, however due to this is a hero movie, it is very hard to avoid some violence, but it does not has blood spilling over, so it is still safe and entertaining to watch.
Writing:
The Incredible as a concept dates back to 1993, when Bird sketched the family during a period in which he tried to break into film。 Pixar announced a multi film contract with Bird on May 4, 2000. The Incredibles was written and directed solely by Brad Bird, a departure from previous Pixar production which typically had 2 or 3 directors and as many screenwriters.
Bird came to Pixar with the lineup of the story's family members worked out: a mom and dad, both suffering through the dad's midlife crisis, a shy teenage girl, a cocky ten-year-old boy, and a baby. Bird had based their powers on family archetypes.
Animation:
Brad Bird was asked to bring in his own tam for the production. He brought up a core group of people he worked with on The Iron Giant. Because of this, many 2-D artists had to make the shift to 3-D. The film's characters were designed by Tony Fucile and Teddy Newton, whom Bird had brought with him from Warner Bros. Like the most computer-animated films, The Incredibles had a year-long period of building the film from the inside out:
-modelling the shape and body of the characters and understanding controls that work face and body.
-the voice of the character before animation could even begin.
Technical crew members:
For the technical crew members, it was a huge challenge to Bird, because humans are widely considered to be the most difficult thing to work on in animation. Disney Pictures and Pixar animators filled themselves walking to better understanding on human motion, creating all-human cast required creating new technology to animate human anatomy, clothing and realistic skin and hair.
For example, Violeta, one of the character, has a long black hair that covers her face at the beginning, it is hard to control it because as she moves or turns her head, the hair has to movie with her as well.
As this movie requires a lot of movements and action scenes, the audiences sometimes will watch the characters as they move or from the back, in order to increase the reality of this movie, the crews have to design bones and muscles for the characters too.
The main character- Bob, is a huge and strong muscular superhero, which is claimed by the crews, "one of the toughest character for them to model and rig because he is such a muscular guy", therefore in order to build his skeleton, they have to put muscles, skins, bones and fat would attach to it, which is able to flex and ripple. They also used a new technology called "goo:, which allows the skin to react to the muscles sliding and sticking underneath in a very true fashion.

PRODUCTION PROCESS
Before doing anything yet, the movie requires a carefully planned stages. First they need a storyline and a storyboard to turn into a form of early animation, that allows the filmmakers to control the sequences before actually animating them.
This is Brad Bird who wrote and directed the film.

This clip here is the training montage scene of Bob, and it also allows us to see his muscles structure, his movements, skin and body motion very clearly

This clip here is the Lithe or Death scene of the elastic girl- Helen Parr, and it also allows us to see her muscles structure, her movements, skin and body motion very clearly. Especially how flexible her body is stretched, bended and folded into a variety of shapes.
The elastic girl pushed the animators one step further, and so they wrote a program called a "deformer" that would allow her to twist and turn as needed. The animators actually pull her body into a parachute shape or stretch her arm out into a long ribbon of flesh and bone.

THE MUSIC OF THE FILM
The music is scored by Michael Giacchino. The music was inspired by the film- "the future as seen" from the 1960s.
This movie has its own orchestra, from the clips below, we can see that the studio was full of musicians, and there are recording next to the each part of the instruments.
From this video above, we can see that the music is being directed as an orchestra form, there are a lot of musicians who play the music, for example violinist, cellist, and other musicians, they record the music in a room that is just enough for everyone, this is because a smaller space can help to record clearer, better and louder music performed by the musicians, it also puts a phenomenal effect on the music and makes it feels more heroic. There is a director at the middle to guide the musicians where to increase or decrease the volume of the music, where to stop and where to add effects, so make the music more in live and interesting.
LIGHTING
From a lighting perspective, "The Incredibles" was an enormous job because of the unusually large number of sets and shots. "The Incredible" had nearly 600 more shots than "Monsters.Inc". The lighting crew also had the tricky job of trying to create cinematographic lighting schemes that would match the unique look of the film.
This meant less light, and more contrast, like a live-action thriller or adventure story. This gave crew a chance to create more delicate lighting effects that added to the overall photo-realism and impact of the film. For example, there is a sequence in which Mrs.Incredible is in shadow in a car, but there's still enough to fill light to read her eyes.
I have screenshot a few photos from the film, and here we can see that the Mrs.Incredible is in a dark tunnel, so suppose the environment should be dark too. But there's some lighting that allows us to see her.
The characters (Good)
-Bob Parr (Mr.Incredible)
As the centre of the film is Bob Parr, Mr.Incredible himself, the family's muscular father who is trying to come to terms with the changes in his life that have taken him from superhero to normal citizens. For Bob, the director presented him as the combination of humour and tough guy presented by Craig T Nelson. He is also a very brave and has a helping heart, which fully symbolise the characteristic of a hero, when he saw a person being beaten in the street, he was urged to help this person while being told off by his boss. When he was forced to suit into a citizen's life, he always miss the glory days he had as a hero, he kept all his old newspapers and posters when he was a hero. He even lied to his wife that he was going with his friends at night to play bowling, but in fact they went to rescue the people who was locked in a building due to a big fire, we can see he is a true hero and how much he loves to be a hero.
Craig T Nelson
- Helen Parr (Elastic girl)
Helen, generally known as the super-flexible superhero Elastigirl. This character was created as a typical modern mom, says Bird, "has to stretch in hundreds of different ways each day." She is a very strong woman, and you feel like there's a part of the Holly that she will never crack. To emphasis this, she was flying a jet and taking both her eldest children in the family to seek for their father, during this, 2 bombs were following her and she had to control the jet, connecting with the flight control centre, directing her children what to do, normal women would cry or would be helpless in this situation, but this woman she tried her best to keep calm and make the situation better. Her ability is related to her name, "Elastigirl", who is able to stretch as long and wide as she could, folding into different shapes such as a parachute.
-Violet Parr
Bob and Helen Parr have 3 children: the timid teenage Violet, the speedy 10 year old Dash and baby Jack-Jack. In developing their individual superpowers, personalities and human weaknesses.
Violet is a typical teenage who's not comfortable in her own skin, and is in between being a kid and an adult.
Bird said "Invisibility seemed like the right superpower for her."
For the voice of Violet, the director had an emphasis that resulted in an unusual choice. Sarah Vowell played her voice.
Violet has the biggest change over this movie, from timidate to confident. She used to be in love with a boy at her school, she would hide behind the stairs to peek at him and smile to herself, when he passed by, she would use her invisible power to hide herself. However, at the end of the movie, she traversed to be a confident girl, she put her hair behind her ears, not covering half of her face anymore. She could talk to people confidently and happily, she could even talk to the boy that she was in love with face to face and agreed to hang out with him for a movie.
Sarah Vowell
-Dash Parr
Dash is the proud and naughty son of Bob and Helen Parr. He is gifted with super-speed and was frustrated by the fact that he is forbidden to show it off.
To play Dash, the boy whose parents have to cheer "slow down". When he enters a school race, the filmmakers cast then 11-year-old Spencer Fox. Fox made his feature-film in "The Incredibles".
Dash really wants to show off his super-speed skills, however this could not be shown due to the government's law, every time when there is a race, he has to keep his pace slow to meet the normal kid's ability, he was always the naughtiest boy in class, due to playing tricks on the teacher, and always got to see the headmaster with his mother.
At the end of the movie, he had more rights to run like his usual way, he still had to slow down a bit, but he ran like usual at the end of the race, and got the gold medal, which creates a humorous scene to the audience.
Due to his characteristic, naughty and cocky, therefore he is one of the humorous character in the movie, that makes audience laugh and relax.
Spencer Fox
- Frozone
The filmmakers set out to find an actor cool enough to portray Fronzone. A superhero who can always put his enemies on ice. His superpower is to freeze humans, animals or objects with ice, he is also able to structure something with ice, for example bridges.
Bird said, " Nobody sounds cooler than Sam Jackson, who can be funny, soft or tough as nails." Which is very related to the character's personality.
Fronzone is a friend of Bob's, he also has a hero characteristic like Bob, and they rescued a bunch of people who were locked in a building due to a fire secretly, he is a very good friend, when Bob needs help or the city is in danger, he urged to help. We can see this due to a conversation of him and his wife, he asked his wife anxiously of where she kept his uniform when he saw the giant robot destroying the city through his window, as if he was going to just go out and help. He is also one of the most popular character due to his fantastic ability of controlling ice, but also his characteristic, he was cool and calm while being discovered by the police that they broke down the building accidentally while trying to save the citizens.
Sam Jackson
The characters (Bad)
-Syndrome
Syndrome is the film's villain, he is a mean guy who wanted to be something more. He used to admire Mr.Incredibles and his dreams were to rescue the world out of trouble. However, he was once rejected by Mr.Incredibles and was threw out from his car, he then changed his mind and invest technologies similar to superpowers, for example flying shoes and the big robot.
For the voice of Syndrome, the filmmaker turned to Jason Lee, because he has a very quick sensibility and put his all into creating this unique voice for a villain.
Syndrome is also a very jealous person, all his plans are to take a revenge on Mr.Incredibles, just because he was rejected by him to help. He created all kinds of super technology to win Mr.Incredibles, just to prove he is more capable and superior than him, that he should regret of what he had done to him.
Jason Lee
Mirage
Syndrome's attractive woman who works for him, Mirage, lures Mr.Incredible out of his domestic duties and delivers him into the villain's evil trap. There's more to Mirage than meets the eye, and she proves she's a classic combination of beauty and brains.
Elizabeth Pena, a stage actor, gave Mirage her seductive voice.
However in the movie, Mirage is actually a half villain, she is in loved with Mr.Incredibles at last, because she went to rescue him secretly when Mr.Incredibles was locked by Syndrome, she also gave him hope by telling him that his family was safe and survived after the plane crash. Mr.Incredibles hugged her after he knew the happy news, she smiled, here we can see that she is in loved with him. She tried to refuse to help Syndrome sometimes and showed him her unwillingness by her face expression and speech.
Elizabeth Pena
-The underminer
The underminer is the new super villains, he is determined to declare a war on peace and happiness at the end of the film, which also gives the audience a clue of the second part of The Incredibles.
The actor John Ratzeberger is performing this role vocally, who is known as part of the studios's Oscar winning animation tram.
This actor does not have a lot information to show his personality, because he appeared at the end of the movie, but he claimed that he would destroy the world.
John Ratzeberger
-Gilbert Huph
Gilbert Huph is the boss of Bob Parr at the insurance company, his personality is to see everything petty and cruel and that is ruining Bob Par's life.
He is short, small and criticising. Hyph tests Bob of his bottom line and destroy Bob's every attempt to help the public.
Gilbert Huph is vocalised by Wallace Shawn. He had voiced many different films in Pixar and Disney Pictures, such as " Toy Story" and "The Goofy movie".
Gilbert reflects the reality in the point of view, due to his personality, he is cold-hearted and do not have sympathy towards people. He forced Bob not to help the person who is being beaten in the street, and told him that he is under his control, also using offensive words to make his life worse, he gives a lot of pressure to him, it reflects to most of the boss in reality, and how people see the world without mercy and justice.
Wallace Shawn
The scene stealer: Edna Mode
Edna Mode is one of the great scene-stealing character in "The Incredibles", she is a truly tiny fashion diva. She specialised in designing costumes for superhero. She is funny, eye-catching, and humorous therefore catches audience's attention. She is rich and has high technological security in her house.
The word "No" just does't exist in her vocabulary, she is incredibly confident and sure of herself.
Bird decided to take on this role himself an to voice this character.
When she is here, then this scene is definitely a humorous scene. There is a scene that Helen went to find her to ask if her housemaid came to see her. However, Edna took Helen to see her newest hero uniform design for their family, how she reacts, acts and body language makes audience laugh and entertain them.
Brad Bird
Analysis of different scenes:
Now I would like to analyse some scenes from the movie based on 4 points: Camera, editing, sound and Mise-en-scene.
1. This scene is when Bob was having his secret training. As we can see that, he was training with 2 heavy big trucks.
Camera: This scene is done by long shot, when we need to see out characters and what they are doing in their environment, we go for long shot. With this type of shot, they are not establishing the "world" so much as establishing the character in that world.
Editing: No editing.
Sound: The sound was mysterious and missionary. This gives a feeling to the audiences that he is doing something big and impossible to save the world.
Mise-en-scene: In this scene, the props are the buildings behind and the trucks nearby, this gives the audiences a clue that Bob is in the pier training himself, and we can see two metal chains linking from the truck to his hands, symbolising that he uses the truck as training.
Camera: This scene is done by medium shot, it is widely used through out the film. They are a reliable standard to show you the character nice and close, but not too close, usually cutoff at the waist, plenty of empty space is left around the character, giving him room to act out, gesture, and still see the character in relation to the environment he is in. It is not too intimate, but it's showing you something specific.
Editing: No editing.
Sound: The sound is quiet but evil, it relates to the scene because they were caught by the villain and he was threatening them.
Mise-en-scené: In this scene, we can see that there are many electronic chains, these are the props that gives us idea of where they are.
3. This scene is when Bob Parr saw something extraordinary. In this screenshot, we can see clearly his face expression and especially the eye.
Camera: This scene is done by extreme close up. It can be used for a very intense or super intimate moment or it can just be a very useful information tool. It depends what the director wants to show and why. In this shot, nothing else matters but the subject matter. Background is not unrecognisable, we can only see the character or the object as they cover most of the frame. It keeps the audience informed about the story, the character and the situation, up close and in detail.
Editing: No editing.
Sound: The sound is quite loud and it used the main soundtrack in this film. Which is symbolising there is something important in the scene that amazes the character, or maybe here is the change of the story.
Mise-en-scené: In this scene, we couldn't see the background, therefore hard to analyse the mise-en-scene.
Camera: This scene is done by Over The Shoulder Shot. It is one of the most efficient and widely used methods of shooting a conversation scene, or even to see the vintage point of one character as she glares at another. Sometimes the characters are in close proximity, sometimes they are far away, the shots reverse back and forth and can be used in combination with up shots and down shots, depending on the camera angle and height or placement of characters.
Editing: No editing.
Sound: The sound is dreamy, flirty and slow, which produces a romantic feeling to the scene and the audiences, it also gives an idea to the audiences that they are fallen in love with each other.
Mise-en-scené: The prop in this scene is the buildings at the back, and the small bench. Which gives an idea to the audiences that they are standing on buildings talking to each other. Also they are wearing their "hero suits", this also tells us that they are on some kind of missions.
5. In this scene, Mrs.Incredible was suspicious of Mr.Incredibles having an affair behind her. So, she went to her friend, the intelligent and high-tech hero suit designer, Edna Mode, she is a small and funny character. This scene shows Edna Mode introducing the new series of family suit that she has designed for her family and she, that surprised Mrs.Incredibles because she believed that her husband has retired from hero life, while Edna Mode told her that Mr.Incredibles is keeping a secret behind her.
Camera: This required a few camera shots, for example the medium shot, that allows us the see the characters from the head to their lower part, there's also far shot, that allows the audience to see the background the whole body of the characters. There's also Over the shoulder scenes, that the camera is shooting a person from the other person's shoulder, which shows that they are having a conversation, and how it looks at the person's angle and view.
Editing: No editing.
Sound:This scene does not have any music background. However, some of the sound has a special effects. For example, Edna Mode has to type some kind of security code and speak to the microphone to confirm her identity. Her voiced changed and has echo sounds when she spoke to the microphone.
Mise-en-scené: There are a lot of props in this scene, such as the costumes that Edna Mode designed, the high-tech machines in her office, teacups and chairs. They all show that Edna Mode is a rich designer and she uses high-tech machines to design suits for hero for their benefits.
6. In this scene, the family was having a dinner, however nobody was in a good mood due to the things happened to them at school or at work.
Camera: This scene used a lot of shots, for example the Over the shoulder scene, this shot shows how a person look and feel at that angle and view. Also they used wide shot, that allows the audience to see the furnitures, backgrounds, and all the characters. They also used middle shot so that it is easier to see people's face expression and how they feel. Middle shot is frequently used in this scene as well, so that their face expression and movements can be seen, and audiences will feel easier to understand the meaning of what the characters are doing.
Sound: This scene does not have any music as background.
Editing: No editing.
Mise-en-scené: In this scene, the main prop is the dining table, because this is the dinner scene. Then it is the food, fork and spoons. They are symbolic of a meal, and telling the audiences they are having a dinner.
